MSES undertake rig inspections of various types utilizing the following guidelines:
Standard production GRP sailing yachts with aluminium masts, stainless steel rigging operating inshore.
Annual inspection
Rig <5yrs – inspection by rigger – mast and standing rigging
Rig >5 <10yrs – riggers inspection report from Bosun’s chair close up inspection.
Rig >10 <15yrs – close up inspection with mast unstepped and furling gear stripped for surveyors or qualified riggers inspection and report. Recommended renewal of all standing rigging.
Rig>15yrs – complete renewal of all standing rigging
Wood masts with galvanised rigging
Annual inspection
Riggers inspection from Bosun’s chair
Mast unstepped and inspected by wood specialists at <10yrs
Large yachts and race yachts
Specialist rigger report comprehensive visual inspection several times per year.
Once every four years with a maximum of ten years between inspection intervals a comprehensive full-service mast inspection/refurbishment
Stainless steel 1 x 19 and Dyform
Comprehensive visual inspection several times per year
Once every four years a comprehensive full-service mast inspection/refurbishment
Rod Rigging
1. Standard cruiser / race boats
Dye penetrant testing cold forged ends at 3yrs / 25,000miles. Replacement at 6yrs / 45,000miles (or rehead if sufficient rod length available).
2. Higher spec cruisers with added safety margins in rig selection
Dye penetrant testing cold forged ends at 5yrs / 50,000miles. Replacement at 10yrs / 90,000miles if a planned and documented maintenance regime can be proven.

In addition MSES will appraise condition where records are maintained in accordance with NAVTEC guidelines.
